Joe Gracey – #2

Kimmie gave me the extreme honor of permission to some of Gracey's playlists.  This is the first of several he created.

As I've been transcribing these playlists occasionally I'm confronted with a track that's not available on Spotify, and it puts me in the awkward, but admittedly kind of fun, position of thinking "What would Gracey do?"  Some of the choices are fairly easy: When faced with an out of print early Stevie Ray Vaughn track I substituted Albert King doing the same song (Stevie's playing, in my opinion, is 1 part Albert King, 1 part Jimi Hendrix, 1 part Freddie King, 1 part Johnny Winter and 1 part growing-up-in-Austin).  But where Joe put Kimmie's version of "Invitation to the Blues" I had a LOT of choices.  One could certainly go with the original and that would have been consistent with Gracey's love, reverence even, for the roots of country music.  But he also loved early jazz & swing, and the classic female singers of the era.  So instead I chose the version by Les Brown with Doris Day singing.  Then I listened and realized it's not the same song.  Okay, well, back to many choices... He deliberately did not choose the original version for his playlist.  So how about Cornell Hurd Band - true country with a slightly modern and definitely Austin flavor.  Yet, at the same time that Les Brown/Doris Day song (from 1946!) is damn good.  So I leave it in there for you.  I think Joe would have liked that.

Enjoy!
